Great opportunity to become a Mentor to young Londoners on our iExcel Mentoring Project.
We are looking for volunteers- Mentors who will engage young people in a non-judgemental way as they both unpack challenges confronted by the Mentee and agree on strategies for overcoming those challenges.
Young Black boys are disproportionately affected by youth violence, underachieving in schools.
iExcel mentoring project is both youth empowerment and community involvement in youth wellbeing project.
The project is inspired by the African proverb that says, 'It takes a village to raise a child' The project is recruiting mentors (community parents) within Black community as part of the village. These ‘community parents will provide one-to-one (mostly virtual subject to COVID-19 regulations) mentor support to help young Black boys/men at risk of school exclusion or being drawn into a ‘gang’ lifestyle or having behavioural challenges.
The Project aims are to:
• Provide role models that can support young people to excel
• Create a safe and friendly space for young people to talk and network
• Provide support to help ease the transition from primary school to secondary school
• Work with young people with behavioural challenges
The focus is on supporting development of positive self-image; building aspirations, confidence, and self-esteem, resilience, engender a sense of identity and self-worth by using positive role models.
Though British-born, many BME youths are alienated from mainstream society, have identity issues, and have experienced domestic, mental, and/or physical abuse. Many are from single-parent households with absentee fathers, high exclusion rates from school, a recipe for low educational achievement and life chances. All these environmental factors combined, sometimes contribute to being recruited as a gang member and criminal activities at a relatively early age.
The time is right!
The time is now!
You will have the opportunity to change lives forever.
Your Mentee is waiting.
