Southbank Centre - Creative Encounters: Stacy Makishi

Wed 18 Dec 2024, 5.30pm

In the mood for some tropical, healing-feeling? Here’s two scoops of Aloha, courtesy of artist Stacy Makishi, who’s here with rituals to wrap up the year.

London can be a big place, but there are plenty of friendly faces and creative communities to find your place in. Creative Encounters invites you to experience the array of art and culture that makes this city a home to so many.

Find a creative home in the heart of the city with our monthly creative sessions, bringing together Londoners old and new for conversation, music and making.

Join us on the third Wednesday of the month for live music, hands on creative challenges, poetry from the National Poetry Library, and plenty of things to make and do while you meet new people. So if you’re new to the capital and feeling a little lost – or just eager to meet people and discover something new, come join us and make the Southbank Centre your home for the evening.

Brought up in two indigenous cultures (Hawaiian and Ryukyuan), Stacy Makishi invites you to encounter rowdy rituals and soothing provocations to end the year. Makishi has been making art and infecting folks with curiosity and creativity for over 40 years.

As she says: ‘My life is like a tube of toothpaste. At 61, you’d think I’d be out of tooth, much less, paste. That’s not the case. Drawing upon my life experiences as a missionary, stand up comic, queer performance artist, soul activist, I desperately want to squeeze every bit of my life’s experience with others. The longer I live, the more I’ve got to give. I want to die knowing I held back nothing. I want to die with no paste left in my tube. Go on, give me a squeeze!’

Join in and surf the unknown, dance with mystery and deep dive into curiosity to discover intimacy and adventure.
