The Health Equality and Rights Organisation for LGBTQ+ people
The mission of HERO is to improve the health, enhance the well-being and champion the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
HERO wants to see a world where no LGBTQ+ person is discriminated by health or social inequalities based of their sexuality or gender identity and have the same opportunities in life as any non-LGBTQ+ person.
We do this by:
- Ensuring LGBTQ+ people have access to information and support to enable them to make the best health choices for themselves.
- Decreasing the number of LGBTQ+ people who experience mental illness/suicidal thoughts by offering information, advice, peer-support and signposting to support services.
- Improving LGBTQ+ people’s sexual health, including eradicating new HIV infections by giving up-to-date information about HIV and STIs while encouraging regular HIV and STI testing.
- End HIV-related stigma with campaigns that emotionally connect with our communities.
- Increasing the representation of LGBTQ+ black, Asian and minority ethnic groups within LGBTQ+ communities by ensuring BAME LGBTQ+ people are at the forefront of our work.
LGBT HERO needs volunteers.
If you want to join the LGBT HERO team as a volunteer, please email Sam Killy at sam.killy@lgbthero.org.uk with your availability and your interests.
If you are interested in getting involved with GMFA, FS or OutLife email us on hello@lgbthero.org.uk
All volunteer roles have role descriptions.
Current volunteer roles include:
- graphic designers
- copy-writers
- campaign developers
- photographers
- editorial volunteers
- fundraisers
- modelling for campaigns
- office volunteers
There are some types of activities that LGBT HERO currently does not do.
We therefore do not have volunteer opportunities for things like:
- offering advice or information in person or by phone
- running a drop-in centre or support groups
- providing services such as buddying, legal or welfare advice
